Further to my personal experience in Southern Ethiopia, I have come to realise the great potential for e-learning in delivering medical information to front-line health professionals in resource-poor health facilities. We have successfully managed electronic libraries at three rural health centres in the SNNPR region of Ethiopia for over a year now. I have recieved excellent feedback from the users who include health officers, midwives, nurses and laboratory technicians who have very limited access to medical textbooks. I have also come to realise the need for a uniform platform for delivery of this content that will be used by very busy individuals with limited IT skills. The myraid options available in the form of proprietary software each with its own interface and navigation systems tended to confuse these health workers whose time is better spent treating patients than learning new software every time they need to find information. Moodle is the ideal platform for my intended purpose. And, as I work in surgery, I have decided to start there first. Please remember that this is still a work in progress and must be regarded simply as 'proof of concept' and no more.
